Elkin to join CNO from Boston Medical Center for presentation at VITAL2015

Janet Elkin, president and CEO of Supplemental Health Care, will be speaking today at VITAL2015 -- America's Essential Hospitals' annual conference in San Diego with Nancy Gaden, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Boston Medical Center. In their presentation, entitled “3 ½ Tips to Exceptional Workforce Planning,” the duo will discuss how their in-depth partnership and closely aligned efforts ensured clinical effectiveness during BMC’s recent EMR conversion.

Some of the key ways the team at Supplemental Health Care and Boston Medical Center created such a pivotal program include:

  • Planning ahead. Supplemental Health Care started early in preparing to meet the workforce-management needs of the community hospital network. This included evaluating BMC’s vendor partnerships and expanding support where needed to provide a solid foundation of candidates at the right time.
  • Process with a purpose. The two teams worked closely together to define processes built on flexibility and a sense of urgency. All of the processes needed to be talent-friendly by removing roadblocks and delays in the overall interview and hiring process.
  • Expecting everything. With an internal champion, Supplemental Health Care was able to have both constant oversight and an advocate for its role within the healthcare system. This allows for continual review and quick adjustments when new needs, issues and extensions arise while not losing sight of the end goal: quality patient care.
  • Leverage key learnings. At the end of the contract, Supplemental Health Care and BMC took time to sit down and evaluate successes and possible expansion opportunities. Both teams measured against the target goal of the agreement and created key takeaways from the project for both teams to utilize together in the future.

Elkin and Gaden will share details of the project with attendees from nationwide public healthcare facilities across the country.
